Under what circumstances should a civil engineer use bridge bearings? Why are they so indispensable?

This might be one of the most intriguing questions that I have ever had about my career. Every day I pass by enormous bridges and I can't think but visualize how bridges can withstand great amounts of forces. Essentially, a bridge bearing is a component of a bridge that provides a resting surface between the bridge deck and the bridge piers. I would like to know a bit more as to why they are critical in complex bridge. #college #engineering #engineer #civil-engineering #bridge

Could you please explain the differences between Civil, Architectural, and Mechanical Engineering? Also, could you suggest which one I should possibly take?

I consider math as a "specialty" for me and I think that these three areas will be ones that I consider for my career, however I still am struggling on which I should strive for, so any suggestions would be helpful! #mathematics #civil-engineering #engineering #mechanical-engineer

I'm planning on getting an engineering degree and then going into the medical field to become a doctor. Is biomedical engineering the best course of action for me, or is there another engineering field that would both interest and be beneficial for me?

I've been involved with the Math, Engineering, and Science Academy at my high school for the past four years and absolutely loved it. I love physics and I love the engineering classes offered at my school; however I've always been entranced with the prospect of being a doctor. I'd like to go to medical school after my bachelor's degree and was wondering which field of engineering would be best for me if I were to continue considering it. #computer-software #doctor #engineering #civil-engineering #biomedical-engineering #chemical-engineering #women-in-stem #women-in-tech

What difficulties do you face in opening a firm after graduating?

I'm currently a civil engineering major and a little torn over if I really want to do this, architectural engineering, or simply become an architect. But I do know that I want to open up an architectural firm of my own. So until I decide what I really do want to do with my degree, what difficulties do you face in opening an architectural firm or just a business in general? How long of a period do you suppose should be given to any business to determine if it will work or not? It must be hard to open up a business right after graduation even after a masters degree, what sort of innovative ideas have you seen to work or tried yourself? What type of promoting have you seen and also thought to have worked? Any other information you provide would gladly be appreciated. #business #engineering #management #civil-engineering #architect #firm

As a civil engineer, what type of computer interaction do you have. Specifically, do you write your own programs for building designs? Do you work with an interacting 3D designing system? If not either of these options, how do you come up with blueprints?

Civil Engineering is my dream job but I love making computer programs and working with computers. I am very curious as to how much civil engineers work with computers and what that specifically looks like. #civil-engineering

How recent graduate should find job in civil engineering in Vancouver?

Hi, I did my undergrad in civil engineering from India and right now I am doing Applied Planning program in Vancouver and I am new here. There are lot of questions that are crossing my now like: 1. If I wanted to pursue my career as civil engineer, what are the job opportunities for recent graduates here? Do I need to register myself as EIT under APEGBC? Is my undergrad degree valid here? How to network with civil engineering companies? What are some of the civil engineering companies here? 2. If I want to pursue my career as Planner, which private companies can hire me? ( I think city only hires Permanent residents). 3. Is there any field, I can collaborate both things? #civil-engineering #urban-planning #land-development #zoning

Is there any minors you would suggest getting along with an engineering degree?

I am trying to decide whether to use the extra class slots I will have open, due to taking college classes in high school, to get a minor, or to skip the minor and get a masters in 4 years in architectural engineering. I am wondering if it is that beneficial to get a minor, in say business, or if there is another minor that would work well with my major. So basically, is it better to have a major and 1 or 2 minors, or to have a masters only. #engineering #mechanical-engineering #civil-engineering

As a civil engineer, what percent of your time would you say per week you spend on site helping to organize construction efforts and people and what percent of your time do you spend in an office making calculation and coming up with designs?

I would love to be a civil engineer one day. I definitely don't want to be a construction worker and spend all day outside working with tools and building things but I also wouldn't want a 10 hour a day desk job. Civil engineer seems like a happy medium and I just wondered from a professional if that was the case. #mathematics #civil-engineering

When pursuing a career in Civil Engineering is better to specialize in one specific topic, or to have a broader overview?

I know that civil engineering is just a basic overview of most types of engineering, but i don't know if getting a degree in just generic civil engineering is better than a degree in a specific area of civil engineering. #civil-engineering
