How can I get into an operations research career in the construction industry?

I am a college sophomore now majoring in civil engineering, and by the end of this summer I would have completed 4 summer internships: 2 in construction project engineering/general contracting, and 2 in civil engineering research (specifically in environmental engineering/water resources and structural engineering). While making plans and ideas for my academic and professional goals for next year and in the future, I reflected on my interests and passion for this field and how they changed over time. I find myself deeply committed to the construction industry in general, and definitely want to pursue my career in it after graduating college. At the same time, I have a variety of interests that overlap each other, and I am wondering how I should go about integrating them in my long-term professional life. So that got me to thinking about operations research as an option; I would like to immerse myself in both STEM and management of construction, in a data-driven environment that benefits and merges academia and industry, as previous research studies have done before. However, I don't know how I should proceed about this seemingly abstract goal, and my online research so far points to no summer opportunities, whether in academic research or industrial research, for a civil engineering undergraduate to apply their education and/or expand on it, within an operations research context. What should be my next step then? I am also aware, that currently operations research is much more oftenly associated with applied mathematics, computer science, physics, and business/economics than construction, per say. Overall, with my hopes in operations research, I don't think I've strayed away from my passion in civil engineering and construction, but rather that I use them in an innovative position that reflects society's needs, similar to the concept of supply and demand in terms of employment opportunities. #civil-engineering #STEM #datascience #management #operations-research #construction #construction-management #construction-engineering #research #engineering #internships

How to Structure and Write a great Statement of Purpose for Graduate School?

Hi, I am a mechanical engineering senior interested in applying for grad school for next fall. I understand that schools want a statement of purpose/essay detailing why I want to apply for the program, my interests, my experience, etc. I'm interested in design and manufacturing engineering and I have research experience from my current school, but I'm just not sure how to put it all together. #graduate-school #engineering #college #mechanicalengineering #manufacturingengineering #additivemanufacturing #design #designengineering #programming #engineer #graduatelevel #highereducation #electricalengineering #computerengineering #civil-engineering

I plan on majoring in structural engineering and I want to get a minor as well. Would it be more effective to get a math minor or a business minor for a better chance at a good job?

I love math and I am really good at it, but if I go into more corporate businesses, will I need the business minor instead? #civil-engineering #engineer #engineering #math

Is "drafter" a still-used position at engineering firms? What skills does a drafter need?

For example, if you were going to a college with vocational courses, would it make sense to try to pursue something that prepares you to become a drafter? Are engineering firms still looking for people to handle just drafting, or do they only want engineers? If they are, what are the necessary drafting programs to learn that make you more employable? #engineering #civil-engineering #drafting #computer-aided-drafting #architectural-drafting #structural-drafting #vocational-school #vocational-planning #vocationalprograms

Would someone graduating at 40 with their first degree in civil engineering have a chance in the workforce?

Is it sensible or feasible (or how does the outlook seem in general) to get one's first degree at 40 as a civil engineer? (Entering college at 35, graduating at 40) Would potential employers be biased against an "old" newbie, making it impossible to pay off school debt at such a late date because jobs would go to younger graduates? #engineering #civil-engineering #adult-education #career-change

I am a High School student and don't know which career i would choose. For one I know people don't take music seriously, because of the jobs. But I love Both!!

Engineering and Music sound GREAT for me, but every time I search "engineering in the music industry" it says audio engineering, for some reason I was hoping something else. What kind of engineering would it fall under if I were to use it to work in the music industry? #civil-engineering #mechanical-engineering #music-industry #music-recording #music-producer #music-composition #music-education

Which engineering career is best for someone with a bachelors in civil engineering that would make the most impact on improving environmental conditions?

I am asking because I have been passionate about solving the environmental problems around the world since I was in elementary school, and I am currently majoring in civil engineering because environmental engineering is under the civil engineering branch. Although I can just major in environmental engineering, I find having a broader knowledge can lead to providing more ways to solve environmental problems. #bachelors-degree #civil-engineering #environmental-engineering #engineering

What is the most rewarding part of being a structural engineer?

This is my major and I'll be graduating soon. One of the reasons I originally chose this was because I always liked math and physics, but I wanted to make sure I could use those skills to help people, but lately I've seen this field as more of putting up high rises and luxury condos for people who are already wealthy and not a field that really helps the general public. Any advice or thoughts? Thanks! #structural-engineering #civil-engineering #development
