What colleges/universities should I apply to?

Hi, I'm a high school junior who's trying to figure out which colleges to apply to in August. I want to major in Mechanical Engineering. I want to go out of state for college and to one that's known for its engineering program. The problem is money. I'm interested in the University of Florida and the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign but I don't know if they give good financial aid, especially to a student from out of state. I have 4.0 gpa unweighted, have been taking concurrent enrollment since the ninth grade, will graduate with also graduate high school an associate's of science, and have some pretty alright extracurriculars. I just barely took the ACT, so I don't know my score yet but think it'll be around 29-32. I also qualify for maximum financial aid from the FAFSA. What colleges would be a good fit for me, especially since my financial situation is very bad?

What are my chances of getting admitted to Vanderbilt?

Vanderbilt is a goal of mine. What are my chances so far as a Tennessee resident junior with 35 ACT composite, 4.0 GPA, multiple APs (all 5s so far), but basically no extracurriculars because of my family situation? I'm learning how to program via an online python course and am also working on my own solo game project. Would that be enough to circumvent the lack of extracurriculars and get me admitted to such a prestigious school? Any other suggestions or advice is greatly welcomed. Thank you!

Is changing my schedule worth it for technical school ?

My school offers a program where juniors and seniors can apply to leave for their first two blocks to go to technical school. They earn four elective credits per year for this and can even earn college credit. They still have to earn enough credits to graduate, so sacrifices have to be made. In my case I would like to apply for their engineering and robotics program. Since I’ll only have two classes a day, I won’t be able to take a lot of the classes I want to. These are AP Calc C (I can take BC the previous year instead of AB), two additional years of French (including French 4 and AP), two years of band (I’ve been doing band since fourth grade; I play seven instruments), AP Comp Sci A, AP Chem (I’ve loved chemistry since third grade), and AP Psych. Will this look bad for college? Is it worth it?

Dual Enrollment vs. AP courses?

Since beginning high school, I've believed enrolling in college courses would be more advantageous. However, I've started to wonder whether certain selective colleges might perceive them differently in the context of college applications. l've claimed 20 credits at my state university (UMN) and additional credits at my local community college. Although my school offers multiple AP classes, I opted for college courses due to the diverse options available each semester. By the time I graduate from high school, I'll have amassed over 80 college credits. Is it plausible that this choice might put me at a disadvantage? Could colleges prioritize students with AP classes when reviewing applications? To be honest, I think they would prefer AP classes because they're standardized across the nation, but on the other side, I believe college/university classes are more rigorous and can reflect my intellectual curiosity.

College classes vs. AP classes?

Ever since I started high school, I always thought taking actual college classes made more sense. However, I’ve begun to wonder if specific selective colleges will look at them differently regarding college applications. I have taken 20 credits at my state university (UMN) and more at my local CC. My school offers multiple AP classes, but I choose college classes because they allow me diverse options of courses each semester. I will graduate from high school with 80+ college credits. Is it possible that I may be at a disadvantage regarding this choice? Will the college review my application and say they want students with AP classes?

When writing my admissions essay, should I include the fact that I am trans?

I don't know how much they need to know about me. I'm not transitioned yet, and I'm afraid if I say I'm a male and then show up female presenting they won't accept me or will kick me out.

Is it still possible to get into a top 20 school with a 3.8 gpa?

For context in 9th grade I got a 4.0 gpa and for this year I got a 3.6 gpa for semester 1 despite the fact I had a 4 for all my classes except for marketing. I got a 3.2 which is considered an A at my school. But because I enrolled into marketing class late which is not my fault at all my teacher decided to give me 0.25/0.50 credit even though I made up the past work. My counselor decided to change my class before the end of the semester which I was so confused about and I wasn’t allowed to change my class. The way my school calculates gpa is extremely weird and unfair. There’s no way I got a 3.6 gpa for the first semester that doesn’t seem right. I am in 10th grade.

What are some extracurriculars I could do that is stem/medicine based?

I’ve had a lot of ideas on what Extracurriculars I want to do but they just seem too much for me to accomplish as a 16 year old. Some ideas I had was formulating an eco friendly sunscreen using chemistry principals but I would assume you need to have a degree in chemistry. Another idea was creating a skin cancer detecting app, or starting a program by going around to different schools, and/or community centers providing information on skin cancer and hosting events with the help of volunteers from my school. Honestly this all just seems really complicated for me to do especially without a mentor. I plan to start volunteering at a kidney center next month and get a part time job on the weekends. At the moment I am applying to stem/medicine based internships. I need some advice. I am 16 and in 10th grade. I plan to major in chemistry and I aspire to be a dermatologist.

Is it true that it is easy for IITians to get into MBA programmes in top business schools abroad? Is it impossible for students from other institutes (like MSRIT, etc.) who are equally qualified with GMAT scores?

I've heard that most of the students from india who get into mba programmes abroad are IITians and very few of the students of other institutes in India get into the same programme. Is it a myth or reality and why?

In terms of applying to graduate school, would my chances for admission be higher with a Master's degree?

I am a psychology major and graduating in the Fall of 2025. I've been looking to clinical psychology PhD programs, but some programs don't require a Master's degree for admission. However, I don't know if that would make me less competitive when applying. If I could avoid 2-3 additional years of paying for school I would love that, but I don't know if my chances would be better with more schooling. Any advice would be great!

What should I do if I have two different passions I heard that to get into competitive colleges you needed to show a spike on your resume like a specific passion you pursued. The issue is I have two science/biology and creative writing. I have always wanted to go to NYU, or Vanderbilt but both of those are competitive schools and I’m not sure how to connect these two passions? ?

I want to do pre med in college

Can I work on independent research while not being a high school student?

My country’s academic system is different than the US. So, I have already graduated and I’m 18 still not in university, but I really want to do an independent research project and try to get it published somewhere. Is it possible or legitimate for me to do it on my own without teachers or help and use this project as an activity for my college application? It’s actually a passion project and not to make my application look good, however, I have seen that most of these are done with mentors and such and I don’t have one available and I am unsure on where and how I could find one. I wouldn’t need a lab because it’s for a psychology social research, I would just need people to answer a few questions I would formulate on a form and I would go from there.

Should I go to L.A. Film School or USC?

I have started to look into USC as well and off of its stats and the fact that it is a university, I can tell it's good. I'm just worried that I might be setting my goals too high. I'm pretty sure their Cinematic Arts school has a three percent acceptance rate and while I could prepare for high school and get a 4.0 GPA and all that, I would still have low chances of being accepted. Are there any other ways I could increase my chances of getting in? And if I don't get in should I then go to L.A. Film School or just keep trying to get into USC? Oh and also Michelle Marotta if you're reading this, thank you for answering every one of my questions. It really has been great advice.

I'm applying to University of Manitoba in Canada into the Faculty of Science and I'm from Nigeria so one of the admission requirements is that I need an equivalent minimum average of B3 (80%) over the four courses needed with no less than C6(60%) in each course. The problem is how do I calculate my average because I'm a bit confused, to make sure I'm eligible and I meet the requirements before applying?

I'm a high school graduate.
