How do I decide between getting a lcsw or lmhc/lpcc degree?

I have a BS in psychology and want to go back to school to work in the mental health field with the chronically mentally ill, as of now. It would be easier for me financially to get the counseling degree, but I know that the social work degree offers more variety in terms of careers, and it is possible I could change fields I want to work in.

The Demand for High School Academic Counselors in 5 Years

As a high school academic counselor, you have likely witnessed massive layoffs of counselors during recessions such as the one during Covid-19. Simultaneously, most can agree that in California at least, there is a huge lack of academic counselors in comparison to students. Where do you see the demand for academic counselors in five years, and how easily do you think new graduates will be able to get internships/ a job?

Why are counselors important when it comes to mental health?

My dream career is to be a mental health counselor. Mental health counselors talk to a patient and get to know the person, they do this so they can give advice or feedback that relates more to the patient and their struggles. Speaking from personal experience I have found that counseling does work when you let it and find the right person for you. Once you find the right counselor it's easier for you to talk about things and easier for you to start working on yourself and your struggles. I did counseling for 3 years straight and switched through a bunch of medications until I finally let counseling help me and started taking the things my counselor told me to heart, he told me to start finding things I enjoyed and using them as a release for my darkness that I battle with, and I'm proud to say I have done these things and I'm doing better than I have been in a long time. Mental health counselors can save lives.
