I feel like a total failure. How do I move on from here?

In high school, I got good grades. I graduated with a 3.5 GPA. I got into some great colleges like NYU tisch, Syracuse, Pitt, UConn, PSU, etc. I'm the oldest of 10 kids, and from a poor family. My dads a janitor, and my mom is a waitress. I needed $7k/year to go to pitt (After FAFSA). My parents were broke and had terrible credit scores, so I wasn't able to go to school. I was working a full time job at 18, and couldn't afford it either. This led me down a path of depression and addiction. I'm now sober, and on the right meds. I'm about to finish my 2nd year of community college, and my grades are bad. I have a 2.4 gpa. I blew it. I went to getting into the best film school in the world, with a 3.5 HS GPA, to being a broke addict waiting tables. While I'm in a better place mentally. I'm still upset, and feel like I failed. I went from NYU Tisch, to a 2.4 community college gpa. I still want to make movies, but I have no idea where to go from here. Anyome have any advice? #College #Life #General #Film

My severe fear of being poor for the rest of my life, is prohibiting me for going after my dreams. What can I do?

I come from a very poor family. I'm the oldest of 10 kids, and both my parents work blue collar jobs. We were absolutely broke. We didn't have a working car until later in my life. They couldn't afford to pay bills. We got christmas gifts from our local church. We struggled. Growing up, I knew that I wanted to make movies. Movies were the only thing I had. I felt like they belonged to me. Movies babysat us children. I got into severeal prestigious film schools after HS and couldn't afford any of them. My parents were poor with bad credit. This sent me down a dark path full of addiction. I got terrible grades in community college, because I was too drunk. I'm now clean and sober, and trying to salvage the rest of my life. I'm 21 and I have a severe fear of being poor for the rest of my life. It keeps me up at night. I can't spend money like a normal person. Bills and everyday expenses send me into an anxiety inducing headspin. I'm someone who wants to do it all in movies. I want to direct, write, act, produce, etc...All professions that have no safety net. I could spend the next 20 years of my life poor, waiting for someone to give me a chance. College is now out of the question. I'm currently in a 1 year EMT class, and i'm doing pretty well. I figured it would hold me over until I can see a future in film. I have made short films. I have written screenplays. I have acted on stage and in short films. All through the past 5+ years. I have some experience. I'm just afraid. I don't want to experience the feeling my parent's did when raising us. I wouldn't want to have kids. That's too painful. Does anyone have any advice? #career #film #Director #Screenwriter #Entertainment #Fear

I'm a sophomore in high school and I'm exploring my career options. What are some career options that align with these interests and what are some helpful next steps I can take in the near future?

At school I'm mostly interested in English while my hobbies include writing, criticizing or praising movies and music, photography, and anything that has to do with design or visual art. Topics that intrigue me are politics, debate, and changing the world for the better #arts #film-production #film-acting #film-editing #media-production #filmdirector #director #writer #film #editing #english #career #design

How do I choose between two careers?

I'm a community college student, who will be transferring soon. I have wanted to make movies ever since I was a small child. It's the only thing I have ever been good at. I make short films in my free time with my friends, I go to the movies twice a week. I analyze the box office, and the careers of directors and producers. Its the only thing I have ever loved. Cut to my freshman year of community college, and I took a tort law class. Im not gonna lie, I love it. Nowhere near as much as I love movies...But I do like Law. Im good at law. I have gotten straight As in all law classes, and spoke with my Contract Law teacher who thought I should end up in law school, and it got me thinking. Im now torn becuase a career in law is stable. Its interesting. Im really good at it. But a career in filmmaking is all I've ever wanted. Its my passion. Its my dream. How do I pick between my passion and what I'm good at? I also don't know If I will be able to afford law school, due to the fact that Im having trouble affording undergrad. Im really torn. I come from a very poor family, and dont want to end up poor and miserable later in life. I want to make the right decision. In a perfect world, I would be able to do both... #college #lawyer #film #Movie #Law #Director #Producer #Cinema #law-school

Which college would be better to go to?

I'm currently deciding between two colleges right now, Binghamton University and University of Colorado Boulder. I'm leaning towards Boulder however I don't know if leaving New York would grant me the same opportunities as Colorado would. My hope is to go into the film industry but I'm going to get a degree in Physics/Computer Science as well as a fall back.

How do I become a screenwriter?

I am a junior in High school and trying to seriously narrow down possible career paths. I am planning on graduating with an AA degree and have multiple extra-circulars and leadership positions. Is a career in film a sustainable option? I love movies, and writing and want to find a creative job in the future. At the same time I want a job that I know can support me. I am willing to work long hours and I won't give up easily, but if the effort isn't worth the results then maybe I should look at other fields. What other jobs would allow me to be a creative writer without having to write full novels or news articles? I've looked online but with all the paths for writers it can be a little overwhelming.

How do I pick what to do in college and with the rest of my life?

I am starting my senior year of high school in the fall and I've been thinking about what I want to do in the future. I really love film and I've been interested in becoming a director or cinematographer, however, I've been told that they aren't practical enough. The alternative is international law and political science because I guess those are things I could settle for. How do I pick what to do?

I plan on writing my first screeplay in 2022. However, I'm not sure whether to write a tv or movie script for my first screenplay?

I have many ideas that could be either a tv script or a movie script. However, just curious, what does the entertainment/film industry value more? TV or Movie Screenplays? I am struggling on my decision. I plan to use the script to submit to writing competitions and apply to grad film school. I would really appreciate some feedback on this matter. Thank you. #movie #film #acting #college #writing #tv #screenplay #script #writer #moviescript #tvscript #teleplay #entertainment #filmindustry

Does anyone have any advice for me?

I'm currently going into my first year of college. I was planning on doing a major in Physics with a minor in film but the more I look into it and do research the more I find out that Physics isn't a secure job. I was originally going to do Computer Science before Physics and I was thinking of switching back to that because I also enjoy programming. My goal post-college was to hopefully get a job in the film industry. If that didn't work out I could have a master's degree in Computer Science and get a job working as a software engineer or something similar. I'm so lost right now and have no clue what I should do. Any advice is helpful. Thank you so much.

Can I pursue two careers at once?

Ever since I was little my life has been about two things Medicine and movies. They are my passions. Movies and medicine are all that I know. I want to learn how to become a surgeon. What do I do? Can I pursue two careers at once? I also want to direct movies. I can't decide between the two. If I work in one of the two jobs I will be depressed and feel like a failure if I don't do the other. Any advice? #doctor #film #surgeon #director #movies

Is it true that nearly 65% of all film directors only make 1 film in their whole life??

I recently read this statistic and it has shocked me. Am I doomed to only put one art piece into this world? The expectation for becoming a director is fame but still. I mean I want to make many movies and the idea of only being able to make one sounds completely hope-crushing. On the other end of the spectrum, I read that there is one director who made 150 movies and another who made 15 in one year. Obviously, this doesn't indicate quality but if someone can make 15 movies in one year, then it gives me some level of hope. Input?

Computer Science Degree in Football Analytics?

Hi! So Im a current Computer Science major that really wants to work in the football industry. I'd like a job where I can be hands-on with the team by presenting stats and data, and being able to break down film with coaches and also be able to be there during practice/games. Is there a job title that would match that description? Is it easy to find a job like that and I know working in sports is easier if there are connections, so how would I be able to find internships throughout college in my area to better help me get into the sports field? Thank you! #film #jobs #computer-science #football #coaching #internship

How can I get more involved in film/the entertainment industry while still in high school?

I will be a sophomore in a couple months. I already selected electives such as video production(mainly works on my school’s tv show) and animation for this upcoming year and I took “intro to acting” last school year. I’m also in stage crew for our play and musical. I want to gain more experience and I know that these will help but I want to be involved outside of just classes. What’s the next step that I should be taking to get involved and gaining experience?
