Is it difficult balancing a music education major with extracurricular activities?

I will be majoring in music education but I still want to participate in clubs and greek life at my college. I am wondering if that is doable or reasonable at all with my major, especially since music majors are so demanding. #music-education

What is the best career in music education other than being a band director?

I love the band activity as a whole, but I am also aware that being a music educator doesn't provide a stable financial ground for a family. I want to know if there is a career in teaching younger people how to tap into their musical abilities other than being a band director. #music #music-education

How does an academic major in college affect job opportunities in the music field?

Hi, I'm a senior in High School. I would like to pursue music as a career, but it is hard for me to find a major that has what I am looking for or one that I can afford/qualify for. My alternative is to apply to either the same college as my preferred program or a cheaper college as an academic major. But I am worried this will negatively affect my chances of succeeding musically in the future. Should I make this decision or will it not be rewarding? #college #majors #music #academic #student-debt #music-education #music-production #music-industry #college-major #college-advice

How do I prepare for a more general music career?

Hi, I'm a senior in high school who wants to pursue music as a career. But most of the majors and programs I find are very specific and would not allow me to explore all the facets of music that would help me find my niche and strengths/weaknesses. How should I approach the college process so that I do not feel trapped in a major I don't like or unable to attend a school that has a great music program, but not the one I'm looking for? #music #composition #contemporary #music-production #music-industry #music-education

As someone who plans on majoring in music performance in college, what should I minor or double major in?

I am well aware of the fact that its going to be a struggle once I get into the world as a musician, so I am exploring other options to do in addition to music performance. Ideally, I would like to do something that is somehow connected to music, like audio engineering etc, but I wanted to see if anyone had any advice. #music #music-performance #college-major #majors #college-majors #choosing-a-major #college-minor #majors-and-minors #music-education #audio-engineering

How do I combine math and music and teaching?

I love math. Before I loved it in school, I would go work out math puzzles with my uncle Richard, compete and train with Math Counts, take the AMC tests, and calculate measurements with my dad in his workshop; now I take the hardest math classes at my school and tutor math through National Honor Society. I’ve gotten to study fractals, harmonics, and the Gamma function through those classes, and the more I study, the more I discover that math is awesome. When school was easy, math was a place I could go to get challenged, to get lost and find myself again. Once school got hard, my perseverance from math helped me push through. But I always hated that most of my peers never felt the way I did about math. They would groan whenever homework was assigned, complain for hours about tricky tests, and get so bored and lost in math class that they would fall asleep. For the past few years, I’ve tutored both formally and informally for my peers and seen just how much a teacher can change a student’s attitude. It only takes one bad math teacher to convince someone that they’re “bad at math,” but one good teacher, like the fabulous Mrs. Olsen, can give them hope. She is still spreading her knowledge in her 33rd year of teaching and makes every student in her classes feel confident about math. I want to be like her. I want to stop pushing kids away from STEM solely because they don’t have the natural talent to succeed under a bad teacher. I want to end the default “I’m bad at math” and replace it with the confidence of a student who is ready to use their math for the rest of their life. But, I am a musician. Music holds me together through the long nights of homework and studying, and I would not be able to keep my grades up without it. I want to do everything in my power to bring music to people in every community, so my heart is slashed open every time I see another arts budget cut, another music teacher fired, another kid told they’ll never succeed in the arts. After all, when a school is short on money, like many schools in America are, arts are the first things to go. While I love STEM and know that it will build the future, music will keep the people of that future passionate and alive. I want to earn a certification in math education and music education and bring music to low-income schools who have cut their arts budgets to stay afloat. I may not be able to teach full-time music, but I can be a math teacher to bolster STEM comprehension in a low-income school, while I also run a few music clubs on the side. This could grow to teaching a few in-school music classes, as well as offering free music lessons for students, or reaching out in some other way to spread music through my community. Is this feasible? What degrees should I get? What should I do? aaaaaaaaa #math #mathematics #music #music-education #music-industry

For any musicians, Wilfried Laurier’s undergrad, Community Music Program is a program which doesn’t require any RCM equivalent, but has an advanced rudiments theory test. As a person who only has knowledge of basic, how much of a disadvantage do I have?

I am a senior hoping to pursue in Laurier’s community music program. The audition is no worry for myself, but as an RCM level 4, soon to be 5 pianist, I only have basic theory knowledge. I am studying past basic and pursuing an All elementary theory book, but how difficult would this be for myself? What are your thoughts on this program as well? This program focuses on leadership and music. I’m planning to branch out into music education afterwards. I feel like this undergrad will be an asset. #music #music-education #music-theory

Should I take Music courses in College, even though I don't know anything?

I plan on becoming a book editor - so an English major, basically. Recently I've been watching vocalists videos on YouTube, and have become fascinated with the creative world of vocal technique. My college offers a plethora of Music courses, and I really want to learn about the subject, but I'm sorely lacking. I have no singing ability - my talking voice alone can't stop cracking. I also don't know how to play an instrument, or only some music terminology. I talked to some musical stars who urged me to expand my horizons, but I'm on scholarship, and worry about failing the class. I've been the dumbest kid in the class before and it was hard to cope with. I don't want these prestigious professors thinking I'm a nitwit. Do you think I should go for it? #college #music #music-education #musical-theatre

Should I Quit Band?

So, there's a lot of problems. My band only has about 20 people. 1 out of our four middle schools are sending up new freshmen to our band. I've also started losing interest in band. Most kids in band are either new/inexperienced, or they just don't practice, and don’t care. Most kids are just trying to get their fine arts credits for graduation. There’s no after school clubs for band, since Jazz Band was made into an actual class. There’s no marching band. All that's left is drumline and I have no interest in that. I play trumpet, and there used to be three of us, but one moved to another school, and the other has no idea what he’s doing. Basically, I'm pulling the weight for trumpets. I love being able to say that I play trumpet in band, and I really don't want to let my band and teacher down. I like having an easy class where I don’t need to worry about a grade. My band teacher also says that he could get me a scholarship, but I just got braces, which really prevents me from playing well. I don’t plan on continuing band in college if I don’t get a scholarship. If I quit band, it will help free up classes so I don't have to take summer school to catch up on credits. What are your thoughts? Will it look bad for college applications if I quit band? #music #music-education #music-production #music-production #musician #art #college #teacher # #scholarship #teaching #school #education
