What careers could I be headed towards?

Hey! My name is Abbey and I’m a first-year student at the University of St.Thomas in St.Paul Minnesota. Throughout my whole life, I've had an interest in sports, health, and the human body. Because of this, I decided to major in Exercise Science and double minor in Nutrition and Business Administration. I was looking at becoming an athletic trainer but decided against it a few months ago. I am really just looking for someone who has some knowledge in these areas, and could tell me a little bit of what I could go into when I'm older that includes my major and minors! And any other insights that I could find helpful in the future!

Feeling indecisive-how'd you decide on your major?

I'm basically torn between graphic design, culinary arts and nutrition. My college doesn't offer minors. Since I took graphic design at vocational school and liked it pretty well, I'm thinking about continuing and learning more. But realistically, I don't do as much drawing as I used to, although I consider myself a very creative person. Culinary Arts sounded nice; I'm pretty interested in cooking because it combines world culture and art. But while cooking is fun, I'm pretty rusty, and I get scared off by things like heat and oil. I'm more drawn to cooking my favorite things, and I think at the end of the day I'm more of a baking person. The sound of being a line cook, cooking the same things over and over at rapid speed sounds off-putting. I like the sound of nutrition because while it has to do with food, it's not all about cooking. I find it neat that an every day, delicious thing like food can basically be your medicine, and that could give me a chance to help people. I'd have to take liberal arts first since they don't actually offer nutrition at my college(I'm starting at community college and then transferring). I know I could probably take liberal arts anyway and explore what I really like, but ahh, the other options are appealing. Liberal arts would cut out culinary arts because here in Maine there aren't any 4 year culinary programs. Along with being creative, I love foreign cultures, being hands- on, expressing myself, helping others and making them feel good. How'd you decide? It's almost the start of school and I should really make up my mind! #school #majors #major #college #nutrition #culinaryarts #graphic-design

Pursuing a degree in Epidemiology - Is this possible?

Hello! I am currently a fourth year student studying Nutritional Sciences. After interning this past summer in a dietitians office, I am having second thoughts on my field of study and would appreciate some guidance or any help you may have to offer. A little bit of background info about me.. I first decided to study nutrition because I was interested in eating disorders. However, I feel that if I continue down this path on becoming a registered dietitian, I will be too limited in my role with helping disordered eating patients. I believe a psychology degree would have been more fitting with the line of work I was hoping to do. I want to do more than educate others in the field of nutrition and plan out patient's diets. I was doing some research as to what I can do with my nutritional science degree and something interesting that came up was epidemiology. I read that your degree must be in a related public health field, so my first question is if a degree in nutritional sciences qualifies as such? I was originally planning on doing a dietetic internship after completing my four years but now I plan on looking for masters programs that offer epidemiology. What kind of classes would this entail? I have several science and math classes under my belt but I fear I may lack the knowledge that I would of otherwise had if I had pursued a degree that is more in-line with epidemiology. Can any students who have completed or are currently working on a masters degree chime in, please? Are there any schools or programs you would recommend taking a look at in particular? Finally, if you are or have every studied epidemiology, what is it that you find interesting about the field? Are you happy with your decision? What kind of work have you studied? Personally, the thought of disease and outbreak control is what captured my attention. I would love to study eating disorders, nutrition related disorders such as diabetes, HIV/AIDS, and more. Studying populations in other countries is something else that I am interested in. Thank you for taking the time to read this and I appreciate all feedback! #nutrition #masters-degree #epidemiology #nutritional-epidemiology

How much flexibility would I have as a dietitian?

I got my first bachelor's degree with a pre-med intent. After research and soul-searching, however, I decided that a doctor was not the occupation for me. I learned that many of them take few, if any, nutrition courses. It seems as if many medical schools in the US train people to write prescriptions for one part of the body rather than to understand the body as an integrated unit. I want the freedom to incorporate holistic practices, ancient health techniques, international diets, and the like into my career as a dietitian- not just the conventional American forms of treatment. Am I dreaming too big? #dietitian #holistic #nutrition #wellness

Pharmacist looking for career options in Nutrition

I did a masters in Pharmaceutical Sciences but always had particular interest in Nutrition research. I enrolled in my degree thinking it would make it possible for me to work in Nutrition, but most of the jobs available are only in community pharmacy. Is there any course or degree that I can do now to finally be able to enter this area? Or any career suggestions that would make a pharmacist be able to work in the field of Nutrition? Thanks so much :) #science #pharmacist #research #nutrition

What careers do people with majors in Public Health usually go into?

I am a senior in high school and I am looking at Tulane University's School of Public Health. I would want to focus on public health surrounding nutrition. I want to go into non-profit work in Latin America and I think this degree will help me do that in a sustainable way. I think focusing on nutrition education will be a way to do the most with limited resources. #medicine #nutrition #non-profit #public-health

Could I switch between two professions/jobs?

I was thinking of double majoring in nutrition and music, because I love both subjects so much and want to have both in my life. Would it be possible to switch between the two if one career path does not work out? I want to audition for a music company and be a trainee, but that would require a full time dedication to the music industry. I'm afraid that if I do that, I will lose my knowledge on nutrition and won't be able to go back into that field. But if I start in nutrition and later audition for the music company, I might be too old to get in, and if I do pass auditions, I would face the same problem: trying to get back into the nutrition field. Any solutions?? #career #music #career-choice #career-path #double-major #nutrition #career-change #music-industry

Matching Nutrition and Psychology

I grew up in a little village called Alhuemilla, Chile. Growing up we almost never went to the store to buy food because we grew our own. Fruits and vegetables was always part of our diet. Because of this life style we never got sick from anything.I never went to a hospital. Coming to America I was shocked on how sick people are. Even young people suffer from chronic illness such as cancer, diabetics, and so many others. I know our health depends greatly on what we put in our bodies, the way we eat. This experience has inspired me to study nutrition( organic natural food) and psychology( counselling). However, I don't know how to do this. Do you know if there is a school that teaches nutrition and psychology from a more natural holistic view? What other avenues could I take to approach the are of nutrition and the mind? What program would be the best? Would Harvard, Stanford or John Hopkins University and other elites schools be good for what I want to do. Thank you for reading this. I know I have a lot questions. Have a great day. #neuroscience #nutrition #psychotherapy #medical-nutrition-therapy
