What are some of the careers I can choose? I'm a PR student but don't want to work in an agency.

My major is public relations and I've worked at a couple of agencies that specialize in PR, digital marketing, and advertising. As I gained industry experiences, I realized that agency work is probably not a good fit for me. I do like the creative, fast-paced, everyday-is-not-the-same part of the agency life, but I find myself more drawn to the idea of social justice. In my free time, I always read on and participate in social justice activities. That being said, I'm looking for a profession that's less money-driven, but I'm not privileged enough to not consider money; that's equally as fast-paced as agencies; that provide a sense of fulfillment, knowing that my job is making the world a better place. In addition, if the job welcomes creativity, that'd be perfect. I'm good at relationship building, communication, research, and presentation. Consulting seems to be a glamourous career, but doesn't that require excellent math skills? (I'm not bad at it though, I just don't like it.) I've been feeling lost and helpless since Covid-19, and am getting more and more anxious each day about which career path I should pursue. Your advice is greatly appreciated! #mentoring #publicrelations #career #careerpath #socialjustice #business #consulting #careercounseling #job #jobsearch

What should I actively be doing during this period in which there are mandatory hiring freezes in my industry? Respected New York City fashion public relations companies are supposedly not hiring until the New Year. If anyone can possibly connect me with anyone in the NY PR industry would appreciate :)

I am a recent graduate from Indiana University with an interest in fashion Public Relations, specifically Editorial or VIP PR. #business #marketing #publicrelations #fashion

What direction should I take, I'm great at comms and work with refugees and LGTBQ seniors

my BA is in International Relations. I have volunteered in 8 refugee camps in Greece with Syrian and Iraqi refugees. This work was perfect because I was in charge of comms state-side and worked on the ground in Greece, accessing needs, mitigating issues, and being surrounded by people and a team. I stopped volunteering because of money. I am not privileged enough to keep working for free, though I loved the work! In SF, I volunteered with Openhouse and found I adored working with LGBTQ seniors. There's not really a market for that, besides Openhouse, is there? I work now as a project assistant for an education nonprofit, but I really have no passion for it. I do well at comms, here, though! #career #LGBTQ #refugees #seniors #communications #publicrelations #ngo

I'm feeling lost in my Public Relations studies, considering applying for an "executive assistant" position.

I have an internship at a student-run agency at my university but I feel like I'm still not getting "real world" experience. Two of my foundational classes for my major were with terrible professors that no longer work for the department and I don't want to prolong my graduation any longer/pay more to retake those courses. Overall, I feel like a spinning compass with no direction. And I'm supposed to graduate in May. I looked at positions and found myself looking at "executive assistant" jobs. Most of those tasks seem relevant to what I've been doing in my agency while assisting team leads. Taking meeting notes, scheduling meetings, phone calls, general logistics etc. Is this an acceptable career jump? Would it help me find some direction? It appeals to me because I'd be working closely with someone in a higher position and I might be able to gain insight into their world. I'm very much a learn by doing/observing person. All of my "dream job"(publicity) postings require skills that I don't have. Or they're in locations that are not possible for me. #career-counseling #college-major #job #career #college #publicrelations #pr #executiveassistant #assistant #graduation #job-search

Do big name employers mind if your previous internships were not at big name companies?

I was wondering how HR takes into consideration the locations of where their applicants worked at, and whether working at a small company would matter? (eg. a Marketing Intern for Small Company vs. General Intern for Big Company with some transferrable skills and/or Marketing Intern position from 5-6 years ago) #humanresources #internships #marketing #publicrelations #evaluating-resumes

Agency or Industry? The ultimate PR question!

I am graduating in May of this year and there is a lot of talk about going into an agency profession or starting out in industry. I know I want to do social media management, but I don't know if I should start out in agency or industry. Is agency as scary and difficult as people say it is? Which career path did you take and would you have done it differently? I will probably end up trying both in my career, but I want to know which one you think would be better for getting the most experience and getting really good at something! #PR #agency #industry #jobsearch #socialmedia #publicrelations
