What is the best way to prepare for studying abroad in Spain for a full semester?

My desire to study abroad stems from wanting to learn the language of Spanish, to travel and see the sights, to re-model myself to see new approaches of lifestyles and to develop and make personal growth with lifetime memories. I might be intimidated to let go of my normal day to day routine as I am a planner who strives on time management and schedules. However, I am eager to learn a different side of myself, to grow more independently and be present for myself and the world around me. Spain is a place that is so relevant to my studies and my intentions as a global citizen. From having family members who have traveled the world tell their stories since I was a little girl, I have been taught and expected to love a country that I have never met. My passion for studying the Spanish language, my major and gaining a deeper understanding of new cultures, has inspired me to apply to study abroad Seville, Spain. I leave in January until May and want to make sure I obtain the best experience and absorb the most learning opportunities. What steps and actions should I look into completing and getting ready before leaving beyond expenses and documents? How can I better prepare my mind to a new culture and the shock along with it? #travel #college #spain #studyabroad #spanish #hospitality #prepare

Are foreign language degree considered "useless?"

I love foreign languages. I'm already bilingual. (I speak Spanish fluently.) It's my dream to become a polyglot. In college, I'm certain I want to either minor or major in a foreign language. I'm particularly interested in learning Japanese, but I'm also considering Arabic or Russian. The problem is I'm worried about being able to find a job outside of teaching with my degree. (I don't think I have what it takes to become a teacher.) People have warned me about the dangers of a liberal arts degree, and have suggested that I avoid pursuing a degree in liberal arts and humanities. However, I do love math. In the future, I'm thinking about pursuing a career in immigration law or international business. I'm not really sure. But would a foreign language degree on it's own be considered "useless?" Would I need to find an additional field to major or minor in in order to launch a successful career with a foreign language degree? #foreign-languages #careers-for-people-with-liberal-arts-degrees #japanese #bachelorsdegree #arabic #russian ##spanish

Should I go on and take AP Spanish in high school?

I am a student going into my junior year of high school. This upcoming fall, I will start taking a Spanish IV Honors course for the whole year. Compared to Spanish I (which I took in middle school) and Spanish II (which I took my freshman year), Spanish III has been relatively harder. There is only one teacher for Spanish III and Spanish IV Honors at my school and she challenges us to our greatest potential. Last year, we were forced to start writing essays (3-5 paragraphs in full Spanish) for our tests, plus multiple short answer questions. This was a huge leap from Spanish II, making many of the students in my class struggle. I am incredibly nervous for this year since our essays will require 7-8 paragraphs and 6-10 sentences per paragraph. We are also instructed to use every type of grammar we have learned since Spanish I. To be honest, I am not sure if I am really fit to take Spanish IV Honors, though I was recommended for it. In my senior year, I would be able to take AP Spanish, but do I really want to take it? #student #language #high-school-classes #foreign-languages #ap #spanish #ap-spanish

How to improve spanish skills if there are few native speakers in my area?

I have been studying and learning Spanish since Kindergarten and am reaching a point that requires true interaction with native speakers to improve further. I regularly read the news in Spanish and as a result my reading skills are quite good but my speaking and listening skills are significantly lacking. Unfortunately, my area and particularly school are relatively lacking in diversity and there are very few native speakers with which to interact. It is often thought that business growth and environmental growth cannot go hand in hand. However, this is not true, it is just a topic that has been little explored yet. What background would I need to pursue in college to encourage this?

I believe that industry has a whole has the power and minds to start the clean revolution. Creating products that not only don't hurt, but are beneficial to the environment is not easy, and requires a lot of different perspectives. If I want to grow up and start businesses that not only don't hurt the environment, but nourish it as well, what background should I consider? How vast is the overlap between a career as a translator and a career as an interpreter?

At the moment I am studying Spanish Translation & Interpretation in undergraduate school. I adore reading and writing, but I also value the spoken and listening aspect of language as well, and therefore feel that I would be suited professionally not just for translation, but also for interpretation. Once I become a professional, would I be able to fluidly go between providing translation and interpretation services? Are there companies or jobs that would require both of me and therefore allow me that versatility, or would I have to have two different occupations in order to do both? If you are a translator and/or interpreter, which of the two do you prefer/find more fulfilling?
