What was your experience in applying for and choosing a master's degree program in STEM?

I am interested in pursuing a master's degree in Construction Engineering and Management after graduation, but I welcome those with different backgrounds in STEM and/or Management to respond! :) How did you go about looking for master's degree programs to apply to, and how difficult was the application process(es)? How did you narrow down your options afterwards? I imagine applications for MS programs to be stressful, especially because I plan to take the Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) exam in my senior year. How did you balance preparing for that and the GRE together? What about the financial aid/scholarship/fellowship process? Please also comment on any other information you found pertinent in your own experiences. Thank you! :) #stem #engineering #masters #management

What are the benefits of a smart mirror?

I did an assignment which involved developing a smart mirror; to make it more valuable I added educational resources. Through this I was trying to convey that a smart mirror can be used globally in areas that don't facilitate education. The idea is if there's a smart mirror in most public areas for anyone to use no matter the wealth, life would be easier for those who want to learn by accessing the educational resources on the smart mirror. Anything that needs to be filtered out or identities of certain people that need to be saved can also be programmed into the smart mirror and be saved. This is just one way of thinking about the benefits of a smart mirror that will actually make an impact in your or someone else's life, but what are some other benefits? #programming #stem #technology

Did you ever feel like you had to prove your worth and capabilities in STEM to your peers and/or colleagues? How did you go about doing so?

As a STEM student (civil engineering major), I am constantly reminded about how important it is to stand out from my peers, whether in grades, extracurricular activities/leadership, internships, etc. I feel like going into a STEM education, I've only began realizing how competitive STEM fields are becoming, and that it seems like a basic requirement to have something(s) that apparently proves your worth, capabilities, and knowledge to show to other people. Personally, that takes away some of my enjoyment in being in STEM, because I find it distracting at times, but I wonder how everyone else handles this notion, if they relate to it anyhow. I welcome answers from everyone, including students, professors, and professionals. (Thank you for reading my question as well!) In particular, I am especially curious about the perspective of those who come from minority/underrepresented backgrounds, because I feel that in that area there are also some variations to consider about. #college #career #stem-career #stem #women-in-stem

How can I get into an operations research career in the construction industry?

I am a college sophomore now majoring in civil engineering, and by the end of this summer I would have completed 4 summer internships: 2 in construction project engineering/general contracting, and 2 in civil engineering research (specifically in environmental engineering/water resources and structural engineering). While making plans and ideas for my academic and professional goals for next year and in the future, I reflected on my interests and passion for this field and how they changed over time. I find myself deeply committed to the construction industry in general, and definitely want to pursue my career in it after graduating college. At the same time, I have a variety of interests that overlap each other, and I am wondering how I should go about integrating them in my long-term professional life. So that got me to thinking about operations research as an option; I would like to immerse myself in both STEM and management of construction, in a data-driven environment that benefits and merges academia and industry, as previous research studies have done before. However, I don't know how I should proceed about this seemingly abstract goal, and my online research so far points to no summer opportunities, whether in academic research or industrial research, for a civil engineering undergraduate to apply their education and/or expand on it, within an operations research context. What should be my next step then? I am also aware, that currently operations research is much more oftenly associated with applied mathematics, computer science, physics, and business/economics than construction, per say. Overall, with my hopes in operations research, I don't think I've strayed away from my passion in civil engineering and construction, but rather that I use them in an innovative position that reflects society's needs, similar to the concept of supply and demand in terms of employment opportunities. #civil-engineering #STEM #datascience #management #operations-research #construction #construction-management #construction-engineering #research #engineering #internships
