What is the best way to prepare for a career in veterinary medicine before college?
I am set on becoming a veterinarian and have been ever since I was 8 years old. Just last year I scored a volunteer position at the local humane society and have volunteered for 70 hours there. However, I will be a junior in high school this fall feel like I am not doing enough to prepare and better myself for a college major in either biology or pre-veterinary medicine. Is there anything else that you recommend I should be doing? I should also mention that I am a very avid student and am taking rigorous math and science courses, as those best pertain to a field in animal medicine. My plan is to attend Med School for either a Physician/Surgeon specializing in Neurology or I may plan to go to Veterinary Medical School. My concern is the number of years/hours that are required in residency for General Surgery are much more challenging than those that my be required for Veterinary Med School. I began college as a Animal Science major and realized it wasn't for me. I'm currently a Psychology major, but I'm hoping to still be eligible of becoming a vet student. I keep holding onto the idea that you don't have to be a traditional vet student to be qualified. I have no direction of what I want to do anymore. Currently, I'm planning my degree and I don't know if all the trouble of taking science classes is worth it.
