Austin’s Career Stories
Did anyone ever oppose your career plans when you were young or push you in a direction you did not want to go?
As a college sophomore, I had lost some of my drive. I remember sitting in my academic counselors office discussing future plans. I thought I would be able to float by, but my study habits had fallen off, my grades were slipping, and I was on academic probation. At that point, my counselor asked if I had thought about other career paths and potentially leaving my university to go to a community college for a different degree or a certificate instead. At this point, I realized I needed to turn things around. I did leave college, but it was a year break to join the Army National Guard. This helped me learn self-discipline and got my head right. I returned to school, improved my grades significantly, was accepted into my graduate program, and graduated with honors. Someone may try to push you in a different direction, but dedication and hard work does pay off.
