Hi Josephine,
You asked a great question! To become an interior designer, you will need a good set of skills, including:
-Researching
-Space planning
-Calculations of spaces
-Picking design pieces
-Modeling
-Rendering
-Presenting your work
-Know the codes
Knowing the basics of these is going to be super helpful for when you start working on a project. You will begin with researching about the building/space, this is how you determine what you should do next for the designing phase. Other skills you need is hand rendering and sketching, these seems pretty simple yet they need time to complete, so you'll also need to plan your time and tasks well. When it comes to software to use for modeling and rendering, Revit, AutoCAD, or SketchUp are some of the most used ones. They provide tools for you to create either fast, simple design or the most complex, unique pieces! If you have not use these software, I really recommend trying them out for a few weeks to get familiar with them, as they are extremely crucial for the final design and rendering.
Once you are done with your idea, or design, you may need to present your work to other professionals, such as your colleagues or client, so learning to compose your work into an organized slide show is another needed element. You want to confidently show off your work and idea and explain it to the audience so they know your design intend. Lastly, find all the books and resources that you can about design, interior design, and design codes and know the important rules when it comes to design for a large group of people. This save you time, especially when you know what to add and what to change/avoid.
These are some of the most important elements when learning to be a successful interior designer. I hope this helps you and good luck!!

Some basic math for pricing and square footage, drafting, AutoCAD, basic office skills, knowledge of buildings and ergonomics plus codes, codes, codes. Also being able to present in front of an audience. For life in general, a sense of humor.
