Hi Ben,

You are too young and don't have any education to be a business manager. You can look for a job though. At 14, you are legally allowed to work. There are restrictions as to how many hours you can work and which industries you can work in. I left some links for you below.

Typical jobs for teens with limited hours and some flexibility would be fast food and retail. Parks or sports centers are another option. You can also offer garden services, clean-up, baby-sitting or pet walking services on your own. If you want to do baby-sitting look for classes and certifications, e.g. from the Red Cross. If you have any skills and talents like computer skills or arts and crafts, you can sell products. If you are good in certain school subjects, you can offer tutoring for younger kids.

You can ask neighbors and family friends if they need any help in the yard or garden, cleaning up or shopping. Walk around your neighborhood and malls in your area. Look for "help wanted" signs or just walk in, express your interest and drop a resume. You can also look for jobs on ZipRecruiter, Snagajob or Indeed. Filter for your age group.

If you are interested in business, consider going to college for a business degree when you are older. Check out college websites to learn what a business degree entails. You can start to think about what kinds of jobs/careers you would like to pursue when you grow up. Use your teen jobs as an opportunity to get an inside look into different careers and businesses.

I hope this helps! All the best to you!

Hello, Ben !

You can work in Kentucky up to three hours per day and 18 hours per week during the school year. At 14, you are not qualified to be a business manager, but if you see it in your future, continue to take Business classes in High School and enroll in college for a Business Degree. Also, all of the Employment Services Programs where you live are for students starting at age 16.

If you are having a time with English and writing, I would also suggest that you pay lots of attention to reading and writing, especially when writing online. I understand regionalisms and dialects, but writing is a skill that will take you far in school and for jobs. Use spellcheck and if you're not sure of sentence structure or usage, there are websites that can help you with that, too. English will be very important for any career you have in the future. Everything you write is important so proof read everything even if it's a couple of casual sentences online and I understand that you are still learning. If you need extra help for English class, look into MentorKids Kentucky a STAR tutoring program for your age range. Do not hesitate to reach out for help with skills.

Since you have not worked yet and want some experience which you'll need to obtain a job, you can consider doing volunteer work. At 14, you can volunteer at The Owensboro Health Volunteen Program, the Senior Community Center of Owensboro Daviess County, The Western Kentucky Botanical Gardens, Sleep in Heavenly Peace -they build bunk beds for children.

Try asking at a supermarket, Walmart or Dollar General if you can apply for a job there. You won't get many hours during school days, but those would be a good start for your first job.

If you need some quick assured money, cash in hand (I can't say how much it would be, though), consider having yard sales on the weekends. Gather items that your family doesn't use anymore and if you can make crafts or art, sell that too at the yard sale. It's cash in hand on the days that you do the sale.

I hope this information can be of some use and I wish you all the best !
