If you are in High School and are interested in becoming a Professional Firefighter I would recommend finding a local Junior Firefighting or Explorer program near you so you can try it out. I was a Junior Firefighter in high school and I learned more there than I did in some of my high school classes. Also, this counts as an extra-curricular activity, and you can gather volunteer hours by participating. Colleges and Employers love to see a motivated person that is engaged with the community and programs other than school.
I did not become a professional firefighter but joined the Navy and went into Nuclear Power instead. EVERYONE in the Navy has to be a firefighter and thanks to my experience in high school, they made me the Fire Team Leader on my aircraft carrier not long after arriving.
Most Professional Firefighters have to take a Civil Service Exam, and your score can influence your chances of being hired. There are Practice books you can get to help practice for this test.
Hopefully this helps! Good Luck!
