How do I choose a minor ?

What is your advice for choosing a major? I want to major in sociology but an unsure what to minor in. Is it career focused or just for my own interest of study? I am undecided of my plans post college, whether to teach, social work, or work with a nonprofit. Do I wait to declare a minor?

Hello Nora,

Choosing a major is pretty much where you believe you would want a career. A major would give you a general sense of the needs, requirements, day-to-day tasks.... of your future career. However, a minor is really more for yourself. Employers rarely ask about it, and it just shows a self interest in a field, than a commitment to it. Nevertheless, if you are unsure of where you want to settle down in your career, starting a minor could lead to a promising major, and later a career in a field you might have never thought you would end up in.

All in all, a minor is really something you feel passionate about, but that you do not imagine yourself working in, or something that you are interested in, but do not want to fully invest in (make it a major) yet.
Thank you comment icon I appreciate this, thank you for the advice. Nora
