What are the best ways to prepare for college?

Hayden - I will assume you are still in high school. What I would recommend is attend a 2 year community college, then go to a 4 year college/university.
Once you select your 2 year community college, talk to your assigned counselor and they can guide you on the courses you need to take. Some courses will be transferable to the university and some will not. When I went, the courses that were numbered 100 and higher would be accepted at the University of Washington.
College will be much different than high school. Basically you are on your own to attend class, be on time, complete your assignments, etc.
At the 2 year college it will be cheaper than the 4 year college and you can probably live at home. Some of the colleges require you live on campus in a dorm, (more expensive then living at home) for the 1st year or 2.
You might also look at apprenticeship programs or trade schools. Most of the 2 year community colleges have various 1 to 2 year programs so you are ready to go to work in your chosen field once you complete the program.
Apply directly to the company or ask them about their training programs. I know working for the electrical company (Puget Sound Energy) you apply through the union, once accepted you will advance till you become a journeyman.

Take as many dual credit classes while in high school. Find out when you can take CLEP tests for college credit. You will save large amounts of time and money by earning credits via those routes.
