How do you cook food? Do you use a recipe book?
I am in 8th grade. I did a career interest survey and meal service is one of my interests. I'd want to make sushi.

It's so exciting that you're already exploring your interests in the kitchen, and wanting to master something as precise and beautiful as sushi is a fantastic goal for an eighth grader. When it comes to cooking, most people start out using recipe books or online guides because they're like a roadmap that helps you understand how different flavors and textures work together. As you get more comfortable, you'll find yourself relying less on the page and more on your own senses, like smelling when a sauce has reduced just right or feeling the stickiness of the rice. For sushi specifically, it's all about the technique and honoring the ingredients, so don't be afraid to watch a few videos and practice your rolling skills even if the first few tries look a bit messy. The best chefs aren't people who never make mistakes; they're the ones who keep tasting, learning, and having fun with the process. You've got a great journey ahead of you in the world of meal service, and I'm sure you'll be making incredible rolls before you know it. You've clearly got the passion to succeed in whatever you put your mind to, and I wish you the very best of luck.

Hi Genesis,
That’s awesome that you’re interested in meal service and want to learn how to make sushi—it’s such a fun and delicious skill! When I cook, sometimes I use a recipe book, especially if it’s a new dish I want to try. Other times, I look up recipes online or watch cooking videos on social media for tips and tricks. And honestly, a lot of my cooking comes from recipes or advice that friends or family have shared with me over the years.
For sushi, you might find some great beginner-friendly recipes and videos online that show you step-by-step how to prepare the rice, pick your fillings, and roll it all together. It’s a creative process, and you can always experiment a little to make it your own.
Keep exploring and practicing and you may even come up with some of your own recipes. You don't always have to follow a book or someone else's steps for cooking. Good luck!

I found a book called “How To Cook Everything” that is an amazing cookbook with 1,000s of items. Between just cooking things from that book and working in a restaurant to gain experience, I was able to open my own catering company. Experience really is the best teacher.
