Michelle’s Answer

i would say the best part is the satisfaction of empowering women to take an active role in their care. I would also say that helping someone achieve a healing birth after a traumatic previous birth is an amazing part of the calling.

But it is a calling: it requires a lot of time and emotional commitment, between seeing women in clinic and being on call for births. On call life is hard, never being able to commit to anything personal while on call. The stress of “Am I going to get called tonight?” is exhausting, even if you don’t get called in!

Sometimes not seeing your family for a few days on end. Missing important family events due to a labor/birth.

Definitely a rewarding profession, but you work hard and need an understanding family!
