Nicholas’s Answer

Hello Lianne,

Very interesting question! Working for Verizon has shown me that degrees can be transferrable for many types of roles. For example, I've met trainers who have teaching degrees.

My advice would be to consider degree paths that can lead to jobs in many different types of companies. Most companies have a need to hire for Human Resources and Information Technology. Also, you want to pursue degrees that offer ongoing learning and certifications to keep your skills fresh.

Hope this helps!

Nick @ Verizon

Sia’s Answer

I'm biased here, but I would say a liberal arts degree. It's a mixture of everything, but it does help you improve your critical thinking, research and writing skills among others. Those skills are essential to most jobs.

At the end of the day though, it comes down to having a good network. I have a BA in International Studies and Communications and have worked in nonprofits, retail and finance. I've been able to do that primarily because of my network.

Sia recommends the following next steps:

Think about your skills and identify the careers that will utilize your skills.

Serge V.’s Answer

Hi Lianne,

I came to find out most graduates who get their degree in a specific field; they usually don't go into that field. What you need is "transferrable skills." I have a friend who has a finance degree and she works for a non-profit organization. Are you focusing on one job market or multiple job markets?

Tom’s Answer

Lianne,
In my opinion, the most transferable college degree is a major in business management. A business degree provides how technology can impact a business, marketing, statistic, accounting, forecasting and budget, and finance. All of these will transfer to most jobs with any career industry since these are critical to business operations.

All of these courses provide a well rounded individual to fully understand how revenue, orders, forcasting products and services impact both the top line and bottom line.
