I have had several jobs managing different materials. The part I enjoyed the most was managing the space. When everything is done correctly you have about 80% of your available space full most of the time. With material coming in constantly and leaving constantly. This sounds like an easy thing to do. Just to keep everything moving but it's not. Weather holds up pick-ups and delivers. Equipment goes down and things get broken. Your staff doesn't show up for work or at least enough of them to keep things going. There can be a lot of issues that you have to address.

When I first started I liked the job because it was simple. Unload a truck, stack it and then move to unload another truck. As I got better and faster I was put in charge of a department that brought me to do a lot of paperwork. I don't like paperwork but I see the need for it so I put up with it.

Now I manage a budget for a department. I can see the same flow of materials doing this. The good news is that you can always find work in material management and if you like it you can even somewhat enjoy it. Good luck!
