Hi Justin,

YouTubers are people who believe in the power of Do It Yourself! They create their own YouTube channels, vlog (video blog) regularly and build subscribers over time. The more traffic their channel gets, the more opportunities they have for percentage-based advertising revenue, freebies for review purposes, promotions and partnerships.

YouTubing tends to start out as a hobby not a career. However, with time, effort and luck it can become a career… and one that pays well. At the very worst, you’ll end up doing something you love and maybe making a bit of money on the side.

The main commercial benefit for YouTubers is getting freebies to showcase and products to review. Any YouTuber can also become a YouTube partner and get a percentage of the advertising hosted by YouTube on their videos. Top-tier YouTubers get serious deals coming their way.

In the Get Started section we talk about the basics of how to become a YouTuber – so, how to think about setting up a channel, and tips for getting commercial revenue out of it. Now let’s have a look at how you could build your traffic and subscribers – because that’s the way to make money from YouTube.

  • YouTube fame tips

  • Have a niche

  • Make your content funny/shocking/passionate/knowledgeable/inspirational

  • Keep adding new content –vlog often and regularly

  • Tag your videos with culturally relevant tags so that people can find your vlogs when they browse search online

  • If there’s a local YouTube gathering area, go to it. Meet people, make friends, be friendly to everyone – you’ll probably end up with new subscribers and new collaborative videos

  • Do video responses to hot topics of the moment (and tag them)

  • If someone wants to help you, go bold and say YES. Collaborate with anyone who asks, make it a community thing. The bigger your community, the bigger your traffic. The world of - - - YouTubers is all about community.

  • Go bold and ask people if they want to collaborate on a video with you! Ask people you like via - YouTube and Twitter. You may not get the really big names, but start small and enjoy the world you do together. Keep saying to yourself: community.

  • Make sure your YouTube channel looks really good. Have a cool name for your channel, make it look clean and professional but also artistic in a way that matches your personality. Show the world how much you care about what you do.

  • If you’ve got other websites or social accounts going, make sure you link to them in your channel descriptions.

To become a YouTuber you’ll need to be persistent because it can take a long time to build up a strong following and it will also take lots of effort (and regular vlogging). You’ll need to be comfortable expressing your own unique personality. It will also help if you have a positive attitude and a strong sense of community – you’ll be happy to collaborate with other YouTubers on videos to help each other out, and you’ll be willing to engage with your subscribers.
