How do I convince my guidance counselor?

This might be a bit off topic, but I really want to take a rigorous course load for high school next year. I didn't meet certain prerequisites so my guidance counselor did not allow me to take classes I planned on taking. Is it possible to get past the prerequisites and convince my guidance counselor to allow me to take more more rigorous classes? #career-paths

Hi there! I would approach this in a couple of ways. First, I would reach out to the teachers that are instructing the courses to gain a better understanding for the background necessary to excel in their classes. This not only will help you prepare for what's ahead but will also show your guidance counselor that you've considered the challenges you may encounter for not having taken the prerequisites. In addition, I would engage your current teachers to see if they would be willing to recommend you for the more challenging classes you'd like to take. Lastly, be sure to show that you respect the opinion of your guidance counselor. Express that you understand his/her concerns but you would really appreciate an opportunity to challenge yourself and that you are dedicated to putting in the time and effort to succeed in these courses.

Hope this helps!

I would take the initiative to get the prerequisites done online and show that I am commited to being prepared to successfully particpate in the class. The prerequisites usually are there for a reason and trying to by pass them is setting you up for failure. Invest the time in doing the work independently online or purchasing the books and studying the material. Tell the guidance counselor that you are willing to take the necessary test/exams to prove you understand the subject areas so they will allow you to take the classes you want. Its going to take hard work and dedication but you can do it!
