Raquel’s Answer

My sister is a social worker and she works in an agency that follows families with children that recently moved to the US from another country. She has always said that it is very rewarding work, but also difficult as she has to witness unpleasant situations and make difficult decisions on behalf of the children's best interest.

There are other areas you can work in such as hospice centers, hospitals and schools.

Raquel recommends the following next steps:

Ask your friends and family if they know anyone that is currently a social worker so you can sit with them and ask them all the questions you have and ask them to walk you through what a typical day looks like for them.

Nancy’s Answer

Hi, Amy,

While no one else can answer for you what career you should choose, it is great to know you are interested in social work. I was interested in that, also, but decided to study psychology and counseling which have a different focus, but are also helping professions.

Consider other professions, also, if you want interaction with people. A career interest test will be available from your school guidance counselor, and may help you consider jobs you haven’t before. This helped me.
