Beth’s Answer

The rehabilitation world consists of Physical, occupational and speech therapists who all have graduate degrees (6-7years of college). They do internships through their college programs - usually 6 months to 12 months.

Physical therapist assistant, occupational assistant and speech assistant have 2-3 years of college and also have internship through their school.

Rehabilitation technician is usually on the job trained. There are a few certificate programs out there but they offer observation time rather than a true internship. A rehabilitation technician helps the therapist by being an extra hand for heavy tasks like learning to walk, or transporting the patient from their room to the therapy gym, cleans the gym, stocks supplies, etc. There are no official internship for technician.

Most facilities will allow you to observe in the therapy gym for a few hours. You must follow facility rules about vaccinations and privacy.

Beth recommends the following next steps:

Google rehab technician certificate programs in your area. Network with rehab facilities about observation opportunities and guidelines.
Watch facility specific job listings for rehab technician position

Anthony’s Answer

Rehab tech are an unskilled position so you can just call around to near by clinic to see if they are hiring since no college degree is need. A degree is need to be a therapist or assistant only. I have hired multiple techs over the years and most only had a high school diploma. But being a tech means limited patient care if following insurance regulations so depends on what you really want to do.

Christina Gail’s Answer

I used to be the manager at Geneiss Rehab Services and we hired Rehab techs. I would suggest taking a look on their website to see if there are any openings near where you are located.

Christina Gail recommends the following next steps:

Network with therapists
Shadow the therapist team including rehab techs
Volunteer at a nursing home with the rehab team
