An LVN is different than an RN. To get your LVN license you have to do a certificate program, usually through a 2-year college or vocational school, then you take the NCLEX-PN to get your license to practice as an LVN. To get your RN license, you must complete either a 2 or 4-year college program for registered nursing then take the NCLEX-RN to get your license to practice. The LVN license is not required in order to get your RN and if you plan to get your RN you may want to skip the LVN and go straight to RN because the courses you take for your LVN program typically won't transfer into an RN program so you may end up repeating courses.

Hello,

No, you do not need an LVN license to become an RN, it may be the quicker route to becoming an RN because if you've already taken some nursing classes and received the LVN license, then you may received credit for those previously taken courses and/or your work experience. But it is not required.

No, this is not necessary. Some will take that route because it will allow you to work while continuing for your RN. There are schools that have a program where you can obtain LVN then complete RN. Other reasons people take this route is to get patient care experience. The education portion has grown a lot over the years, there are quite a few different avenues you could take.

LVN certification isn’t required for RNs-but if you need to work through college, it’s handy. Working as an LVN will help you make connections in health care and know which placements are most satisfactory to work in.
