The important thing here is the difference between 'chef' and 'cook'. A chef is someone who leads, a cook is someone who dependably follows command and can do a consistent job. Depending on what the minimum age requirement is for legal work where you live, you could start working as young as 16? I started an off the books job when I was 14, but that was 21 years ago and probably wouldn't fly now. If you want to be a good cook, get a job in the first restaurant that will hire you, stay humble, ask questions, take notes, move on from there.
