I think some additional information would be helpful. Do you mean "coloring" like in a coloring book? And "painting" like the artwork hanging on the wall in a museum (& elsewhere)?
If your question is, "what is similar between coloring books and painting artwork?", then I would say a lot!
You have to pick colors that put emotion into the picture you are trying to create.
You can add shading to make the artwork look more complex or more natural.
You can make things unique by blending colors together in your own way.
You get to decide if you want to be traditional or unusual.
