A career in science requires a four-year bachelor’s degree in one of the sciences, and course requirements depend on the field of study. Industrial research or independent work may require a doctoral degree, which may add four to eight additional years of study.

As said earlier, it depends highly on what you'd like to do. A bachelor's degree is absolutely necessary, and almost all scientists that contribute meaningfully to academia go forward into graduate school, and often post-doctoral training before starting their own research enterprise.
