What can I do to become a software programmer or graphics designer for video games?

I am asking this question because I've always been fascinated on how video games these days are looking closer and closer to real life people and places with increasingly impressive new ideas for the games. I thought to myself that I wanted to know how to design something like that and program it.

I totally agree; games nowadays look extremely realistic. That happened because game design was identified to be an industry. Now you can go to certain universities and join a game design program. What I suggest you to do at school is to concentrate on your math and physics. On your free time, try to learn a couple of scripting languages. Start by Java and C++.
