It is good that you’re thinking of a career goal early in your life and perhaps (based on your liking) want it to be linked to what you like to do. If I can build further from “I like to write stories” there could be several opportunities for you to pursue as you progress further. Think of writing stories as a skill + something you love doing. And, it is a good combination to have.
I won’t drive you to the obvious ones like writing books, or stories for movie / TV / OTT scripts but more on other areas as well. A couple of examples below -
PR and marketing is an adjacent career choice. Most of the corporate presentations or product launch are less about technical aspects, but more of a compelling story-telling that is remembered for long. Think of Steve Jobs unveiling iPhone.
Education is likely to pivot more toward tech enabled education in future and perhaps remotely + digitally delivered. Which means that the content that we studied in books will become more like a story telling narration – easier to consume and at scale.
Developing compelling narratives is often the most relevant skill for political opinion makers and advocacy firms as well. And therefore, I would urge you to think of your skills and liking around it to broaden your perspective.

So, what are the next things you could consider –
Think of your liking “I like to write stories” with subjects that interest you (or you really care). It can be anything, politics, self-improvement, climate change, history, sports and can be more than one.
Think of the what type of content you want to write on- factual assessment, opinions, fiction etc.
Think of the platforms that you can use to write and publish content – can be Linkedin, Medium, Personal Blog etc.
Think of commercializing it – how will you make money, who will pay for it or it is a side-gig for you for now.

Gaurav recommends the following next steps:

Think of your liking “I like to write stories” with subjects that interest you (or you really care)
Think of the what type of content you want to write on
Think of the platforms that you can use to write and publish content
Think of commercializing it

That's so cool Joshua! I wanted to be a writer when I was growing up too :)

Here are some avenues:
- English teacher (you get to help people make their writing better)
- Journalist
- Freelance writer
- Communications (you'd be doing business writing)
- social media content creator (posts have to start some where :) )
- Blogger - find something you enjoy talking about and start from there

And of course, keep on reading and writing as much as you can, whether it's a social media caption, poetry, essays That's the best way to get really good! Remember to tag Career Village when you get famous :)

Well Joshua, I'm not a writer per say, but I am an author of a book. I enjoy writing, but it's a hobby, not my career. So, my question to you, do love writing above all else and want to make a career out of it, or is it one of several things you are interested in? There are many content writer jobs out there among other opportunities. Either way, writing can always be a part of your life, and if you have something to share, then by all means write.
