Firefighting is a rewarding but challenging career. Know going in that it takes a quite a bit of physical, mental and emotional fortitude to be successful. You will miss out on many events and milestones in life due to the demanding schedule but on the up side, you gain a second family and lifelong friendships. Knowing you make a difference in the lives of others - often on their worst day - is also rewarding.

I have several friends that are firefighters and while they really enjoy what they do, they sometimes miss out on social events because of the irregular work hours.
