To become a dental lab technician, you typically need to complete a formal training program in dental laboratory technology. There are several educational pathways to become a dental lab tech, including certificate, diploma, and degree programs.

Certificate and diploma programs are typically shorter in duration and can be completed in as little as a year. These programs focus on the hands-on skills needed to fabricate dental restorations, such as crowns, bridges, and dentures.

An associate degree in dental laboratory technology may also be available and can provide more in-depth knowledge and training in the field. Some employers may prefer candidates with an associate degree or higher.

If you already have an AS in dental hygiene, you may be able to transfer some credits to a dental laboratory technology program. However, the specific requirements and prerequisites for each program may vary, so it's important to research the program you're interested in and speak with an admissions counselor to determine the best pathway for you to become a dental lab technician.

Additionally, as a career coach, I can assist you in exploring the dental laboratory technology field, identifying the educational pathway that is right for you, and preparing a resume that showcases your skills and qualifications. I can also provide career coaching services such as interview preparation, job search strategies, and networking tips to help you land a job as a dental lab technician.
