How many years of school for a marriage therapist?
I want to be a marriage and family therapist. I've heard I need a Master's degree, but I'm not sure if that's accurate. #marriage-therapist

Hi Christina,
Good question! So marriage and family therapists are typically required to have a master’s degree and a license to practice. The Bureau of Labor Statistics has an Occupational Outlook Handbook where you can search a variety of careers for information about them ranging from daily tasks to educational preparation typically required. If you do a google search for the Occupational Outlook Handbook, it should come up. For whatever reason, the CareerVillage system won't let me include a web address in my response.
Length of master's programs can vary by the program, but they will typically take students 2-3 years to complete. This includes both classes and practicum. After graduation, individuals then need to complete the licensing process in their state to practice. One of the easiest ways to really explore this would be to start to do research on graduate programs in areas that you would be willing to go to school to get more information on specifics. For example, Utah State University has an MFT program that you could explore on their webpage. Moreover, the American Association for Marriage and Family Therapy (AAMFT) will have info about MFTs and accredited programs. (Again, the system won't let me put web addresses for the graduate program or AAMFT in my response, but you can easily google these to find their respective webpages).
