How do you know your major going into college is right?

How do you know that you major is right for you going into college? Like I am majoring in interior design and I feel like it’s right but I don’t know if I will successfully succeed in the field.

Hi Becca! It's perfectly normal to worry about making the "right choice" when it comes to picking a major and then succeeding in that field. If interior design feels right for you in this moment, then listen to your gut. The good thing about college is that you can use this time to explore different things, whether that's through taking a variety of classes, getting an internship or on-campus job, or joining specific clubs. By pursuing a variety of hobbies, interests, subjects, etc. you might surprise yourself with what ends up clicking. Just because you're majoring in interior design doesn't mean you're beholden to that for the rest of your life. It can feel really daunting to think that whatever major you pick for yourself at this point in your life is going to dictate your entire future. The reality is that most working adults will have jobs in a variety of different fields, often with little to do with whatever they majored in.

That being said, it sounds like interior design is something you're really excited about right now! Focus on doing the best you can in your studies right now to set yourself up for the most success upon graduating. However, don't be afraid to explore other interests along the way. By expanding your knowledge you may feel more at ease and less pressure to feel like interior design is the only possible avenue of success for you.
