There are many things to consider when you are looking for the "best" college, and it's something that only YOU are uniquely qualified to answer, which is the fun and exciting part! Like people, colleges are different and unique, so finding the ones that fits your needs is important. Here are some things you should consider when looking at colleges to apply to: location, quality of programs/degrees you want to study, demographic of the community, student culture, cost and alumni support. Make a list of the things you want to get out of college and find the schools that check off the most boxes for you!
In terms of "looking" at colleges, while not always possible, visiting a campus can be a very illuminating experience, allowing you to get a "feel" for the school and the community. If that's not possible, researching online and finding alumni (on linkedin) and asking them questions about their experience is a great way to gain insight on a college. Have fun with it, think about your needs (and not the pressures of what others say or think), and best of luck to you!

On the other hand, I've also known many who have attended Junior Colleges, local State Schools, and some who never pursued higher education, like myself. Their stories are just as diverse. Some have achieved remarkable success, sometimes even surpassing those from more prestigious institutions, while others have not.
