I got my undergraduate degree in industrial engineering and took a few computer science classes. Then I got an MBA in business analytics. When I started college I didn't know I wanted to get into data science, but just having the degree and learning things about business analysis and computer science helped me get here anyway. I think a degree in computer science is probably the most direct way that would provide a solid foundation, but there are definitely other routes!

Becoming a data scientist can require different levels of education, just like many other professions. Most of the data scientists I collaborate with hold a Masters degree in fields like data science, computer science, statistics, finance, or a STEM subject. Even though it's not a strict requirement to have one of these degrees, I would strongly suggest considering it.

I would also advise you to take courses in database design, SQL, and programming languages like Python and R. When it comes to math, Calculus, Discrete Mathematics, and Statistics are the subjects I'd recommend you to focus on.
