What major and career path should I take if I'm interested taking care of rabbits?

I am extremely interested in taking care of rabbits, but I don't want to be a veterinarian because I only want to take care of that one type of animal. I would like to know what career path to take, besides being a vet.

Hi Leigh,

I saw that nobody has answered this question yet. I'm going to take a guess why: none of our tons of volunteers can think of a career path that would give you the ability to focus on such a specific task. In the spirit of trying to be as helpful as possible, I'm going to try to come up with a few ideas for you.

  1. You could become a biologist and focus yourself on the study of rabbit physiology, environments, and ecosystems. Your major here could be biology.

  2. You could work in the "companion animal" (pet) industry as a rabbit breeder. In this case you might major in something like biology or something like animal husbandry (although whether you'd be able to find an animal husbandry program that focuses on rabbits is doubtful).

  3. I can't think of a third option.

Here's a suggestion for how you can come up with more ideas: figure out who has rabbits that need taking care of. I like to encourage students to think of their jobs as ways to create value for people. At a very basic level, if you aren't creating value for someone else, why would they pay you? The value could come in the form of a service you provide that they want, or some joy that your work brings to them, or some monetary value that your work will provide them. It's easy to imagine a job where you create value for a hungry person (e.g., cooks prepare food for restaurant customers). You need to figure out this same thing for yourself: who is someone that I could create value for by taking care of rabbits?

I'm going to end with a question. Can you please tell us more about how you came to such a specific career desire? Hearing more may help us to generate more ideas for you!
