Hi Joanna!

As Austin pointed out below, Political Science is a very broad major. You can specialize in many different fields such as government, non-profit organizations, international affairs, etc. It really depends on what you are interested in doing and what motivates you.

For example, I decided to focus on international affairs and development because I find the interactions between states and the socioeconomic cleavages among population bases fascinating. Through this, I landed a few very cool internships with organizations like the International Rescue Committee and The Borgen Project that allowed me to gain a better understanding of how these issues are tackled in the real world.

However, this is only one track. A few of my friends decided to go the government route and are now working on campaigns for various senators and local candidates.

I hope this helped! If you have any further questions, feel free to reach out to me .

Austin’s Answer

Hi Joanna,

Interesting question, broad but nonetheless interesting. So majoring in political science can get you a lot, the least of which being a job. If you are interested in working for the government or working in the political/lobbying world, then majoring in political science is a great choice. Also, if you want to live in Washington D.C. majoring in political science is also a fantastic choice.

Political science is also an interesting major in my opinion and you will learn not only how political systems work, but you will gain a better appreciation for why the world is the way it is. History, social change, and war are all elements of not only human existence but political science as well.

I'd be better able to answer your question if you provided me with a few more details. Why are you interested in political science? What do you want to get out of it by majoring in it? Do you have a personal interest in poli-sci or is it more because of a potential career?

I hope this helps!!

Best,

Austin
