What are things I can do while I am in college to prepare me for life after I graduate?

I am a class of 2025 senior preparing for my fall at university. I really want to use my time in college as productively as possible to set me up for my future, and would love some tips on how to do that.

Congratulations on starting college this fall! It's such an exciting time, and I know those last few months of senior year and the summer can feel a bit scary. Over the next four years, you'll learn so much, and while some of it will prepare you, you'll also face some unexpected situations. As someone who graduated five years ago, my advice is to get comfortable with networking, professional development, and budgeting while you're in school. It might seem early, but creating a resume and a LinkedIn profile is super important because many career opportunities come through LinkedIn. Start connecting with people who have jobs that interest you. Reach out for a virtual coffee chat; most professionals are happy to help and guide you. Get involved with your school's career development center and attend events. Also, join clubs that align with your interests. For example, I was in Public Health and joined my school's Public Health Society, where I met people working in health departments and hospitals. Having a LinkedIn profile and starting early will open many doors for you, both in college and beyond. You've got this! Good luck!

Allie recommends the following next steps:

Find out what services your school's career center offers. Once you establish a routine in the fall, make an appointment to meet with a career advisor.
Research clubs that seem interesting so you can join in the fall (most schools will have an activities fair - make sure you go!)
Once you have a LinkedIn profile, research one person to reach out to for a virtual coffee meeting.

College is the perfect time to "discover" who you really are as a person. What does this mean?

1. While in high school, you are still under the influence of your immediate family and possibly friends you grew up with. College puts you in contact with people from many parts of the country & the world, who bring their unique backgrounds and experiences. These help shape how you think. Make the most of this by being curious about other cultures and backgrounds. This will help you understand and connect with people at work more easily after graduation.
2. Discover what hobbies, extracurriculars you are passionate about - this is the time to explore new hobbies & extracurriculars that you have not had the opportunity to try before. See what interests you & be adventurous. This will make you a more balanced and well-rounded individual.
3. Make new friends, but keep in touch with old friends too. Friends are for life & they will be a great support system no matter where you are or what you are doing in life.
4. Interact with peers, seniors, professors and leave a positive impact. You never know who will cross paths with in the future.
5. Have FUN! But be practical and do not lose focus on your academics.

Good luck!
