What are some important roles as a Medical Assistant, and what kind of jobs are there?

After taking a break from community college, I decided to go to a technical college so I could enter the workforce as soon as possible. I am going into the Medical Assisting program. I have done some research, but I seek advice from someone who has been in the field. I wanted to get my foot in the door in the medical field, so maybe I can attend college again afterwards.

Fernanda’s Answer

I went to a community college to get my medical assisting certificate which included an externship. The externship was at an urgent care and gave me the first experience so I was able to add that to my resume and get a job in the bay area. I worked at a dermatology practice so roles included scribing (chart notes), sending out prescriptions, completing prior authorizations, and assisting the provider with anything I could during the visit. So I would also set up for procedures such as biopsies, botox, excisions, and prep the patient before the provider comes in.

Fernanda recommends the following next steps:

I would suggest trying to see if your medical assisting program offers an externship because it really helps add to your resume.
Sometimes you can complete a medical terminology course online and get a certificate to boost your job hunting once your done.
