Tommy’s Answer

These subjects open doors to careers that value communication, cultural awareness, and problem-solving. Math Literacy helps with roles in finance, retail, and administration, while History supports research, heritage tourism, and museum work. Tourism leads to opportunities in travel consulting, hospitality, and event planning, and Religion Studies is useful for community work, counseling, and NGOs. Combining them can create unique paths like cultural tour guiding or event coordination. With additional training, students can expand into management or specialized fields.

Tommy recommends the following next steps:

Identify one major field of interest and develop a strong expertise within that field.
Talk to people from those majors who already have a career and get and better understanding of how it feels to be in that field,

Hi Libhongo,

History, tourism and even religious studies would give you an excellent background for a career in the tourism and hospitality industry if that's what you want to do. You could start out by getting some training in a hotel school, with a tour operator or in a wildlife park or other tourist attraction. You could go the culinary route if you are interested in food, or you could get a degree in hospitality management.

But you don't have to go into hospitality if that's not your interest. Your high-school subjects don't lock you into a specific career. Have a look at universities, TVETs, hotel schools, culinary schools to see if anything piques your interest. You can also use sites like Indeed or LinkedIn to look for job openings in your area and what the entry requirements are.

For universities you need to look at the admission criteria for each program. Since you did math literacy, you won't be able to do math-heavy subjects like science, engineering, most healthcare professions and things like finance or accounting. You can study for a certificate, diploma or bachelors in many other subjects though, e.g. in hospitality management or marketing. I left a link to the study options at Nelson-Mandela University for you below. You can find similar information for each university you might be interested in.

I hope this helps! All the best to you!
