What do I do to get good at Cybersecurity?

I’ve ben trying to get into this field for a while but I can’t seem to shake my anxiety about the fear of messing up while hacking, got any tips?

Thank you comment icon If you want to get better at cybersecurity just start small and practice in safe place like TryHackMe or HackTheBox. These platforms are made for beginners so even if you mess up, nothing bad happens. Learn the basic stuff first like networks work, how to use linux and a little bit of Python. You can also set up a small virtual lab on your computer to try things freely. It is completely normal to feel scared in the beginning but dont worry, making mistake in a safe environment is how everyone learns. Take your time and go step by step and you will keep better. Sandeep’s Answer

The first step to excel in Cybersecurity is to embrace that the field demands systematic thinking and technical depth, not just "hacking."

To build skill quickly, focus on the low-level fundamentals that underpin security vulnerabilities. This means achieving fluency in networking protocols, Linux Command Line Interface and scripting with Python for automation. Once you have this technical foundation, choose a specialization like Web App Security or Penetration Testing and utilize structured, hands-on learning resources.

Hi Austin,

It sounds like you're interested in becoming a red team member or ethical hacker. That's a great choice! The "hacking" involved in penetration testing usually happens in safe, non-live environments, so you can learn without worrying about making big mistakes. Following on to Sandeep's advice, it's important to build a strong technical foundation. There are several lab environments available online that offer hands-on practice, often for free or at a low cost for students. These are perfect for learning and experimenting, as you can easily reset them if needed.

Consider pursuing certifications like Pentest+ from CompTIA or Certified Ethical Hacker (CEH). These will help you gain skills and knowledge and boost your confidence. Most certifications have prerequisites that help strengthen your basic technical skills too. Good luck on your journey!

Val’s Answer

As a penetration tester, I believe the best way to improve your cybersecurity skills is to practice in safe, controlled environments. These are places where you can explore without worrying about making mistakes. Almost everything you work with, like labs, virtual machines, sandboxes, and cloud test accounts, can be quickly reset, so it's okay to break things while learning. Hackers can try new things, make mistakes, and experiment as long as it's within the rules and allowed. The more you practice in these virtual settings, the less scared you'll feel.
