Hi my names Kylia i come from cranes middle school, Im a 7th grader. My question is about becoming a lawyer. What’s the most important thing to learn about before being a lawyer. How should I start in learning about law. Why should I learn about this before being lawyer, if I decide that. What would motivate me to follow this till college/university to achieve this goal that I have now. ?

Hi, Kylia--How exciting that you are thinking about a legal career! Learning about a lot of subjects in school will help you be a good law student, and eventually a good lawyer. Lawyers need good logic skills, and your math classes help you develop those skills. Much of the law is based in what you would learn in social studies, particularly in a civics class. Lawyers read and write for a living, and you develop those skills in your language classes. Finally, lawyers work with and for people, so learning to work with others is a great skill. You are probably in activities (sports, music, theater, etc.) that are helping you learn to work with others.
Most high schools today require or encourage you to do public service. There are a lot of public service opportunities that allow you to work in the legal field. Your local bar association might have some ideas for ways that you can serve the community and learn more about the law.
Good luck!
Thank you comment icon Thank you so much! This helps a lot i didn’t know I would need math at all and it’s not my best subject. Thank you for you advice, and motivation to study and work hard in school! Kylia

DENNIS A’s Answer

Hi Kylie::
7th grade is a tough time - lots of things changing in your life. I have been a lawyer for over 40 years so let me give you some advice.

The best thing you can do now is be the best 7th grader there is. Study hard, help at home and have fun. After that, be the best 8th grader there is. The road ahead has a lot of twists and turns. Do your best and try your hardest and stay out of trouble.

The best lawyers I know are all really good people. So go out and have fun, learn all you can about everything and keep your options open.

You are going to make a great lawyer someday! Good luck!
