Hi Aaron! Great question, and since I actually studied in California for my masters in Los Angeles, I got to see the California higher education system up close . The biggest differences between UC and CSU schools come down to focus and selectivity. UCs are more research oriented, tend to be more competitive to get into, offer more doctoral and graduate programs, and generally have a bigger emphasis on academic research alongside teaching. CSUs on the other hand are more focused on practical, career ready education, they're usually more affordable, have higher acceptance rates, and are great for students who want hands on preparation for the workforce right after graduation. Both systems are solid and well respected, so it really depends on what you're looking for. If you want to dive deep into research or plan to pursue advanced degrees, a UC might be the better fit, but if you want a more applied, affordable path straight into a career, CSU is an excellent choice. Either way, California has an amazing public university system, so you really can't go wrong!
