How do you adapt from being in high school to going into college ?

When going to college I am wondering how hard it is to go from relying on your parents to just all of a sudden being alone and the overwhelming feeling of just being by myself and not having my parents there to answer my questions so I'm wondering if its hard to adapt?

Hi Naomi,

We will be afraid of a brand new environment, it's quite common, don't worry too much.

With your statement, looks like you have been lived with your parents and relied on them a lot, the good thing is you can already foresee that there will be a big change in college and you will treat more alone, this is good starting that set a proper expectation, you might not treat all quickly standalone, you might face some problem in college life especially at the very beginning, not everything is perfect, then take time to adapt, this is the journey everyone must take ourselves.

I agree to Nathalye's idea that create a schedule and keep active talk with your parents and current friends, other than them, in order to adapt the college life quickly, here are some tips for your reference:
1. Get to know your dormmates and classmates quickly although might not instant good friend, respect each other, which will reduce your stress
2. Participate club and activity, which is easier way to build up new good connection in college
3. Use campus resources early, such as Counseling or wellbeing services, Academic advisors, you will know there are lots of resources you can obtain advice when feel challenge

You can encourage yourself that "Struggling is the first phase of developing a new strength", then you will feel more peace and have more strengths to move forward.

Best wishes to you and good luck.

Hi Naomi, adjusting can be tough, but you'll get the hang of it. I remember when my mom used to help me with everything, like waking me up for work and doing chores. In college, I had to take care of all that myself while keeping up with my studies. Creating a schedule can really help you manage meal prep, chores, academics, and still find time for yourself and your loved ones. The more you follow your schedule, the easier it will get. Remember, you can always reach out to your parents or visit them if you feel lonely. This is a special time to learn about living on your own and discovering who you are.
