How much does material handling make yearly?

I have been interested in material handling for a few months now and I have been curious about how much it pays me. Does it help make me a living or do I need to work a second job with material handling.

Tarun’s Answer

Hi Dashawn, material-handling workers in the U.S. typically earn around $37,680 annually, or about $18 per hour, based on May 2024 BLS data. Wages can range from $29,780 to over $50,970, influenced by factors like location, experience, overtime, shift premiums, and forklift certifications.

In areas with lower living costs or with the addition of overtime, this job can support a decent living. However, in expensive cities or for families with dependents, it might be challenging to manage on a median wage. Consider a second job based on your local living expenses and available hours, rather than just your current occupation.

Hello Dashawn, great question! According to the the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) the median annual wage for hand laborers and material movers was $37,680 in May 2024. The median wage is the midpoint of earnings for workers in this occupation. The lowest 10% earned below $29,780, while the highest 10% earned above $50,970. I hope this helps!

Suzanne’s Answer

Dashawn, I have no experience in this area but I did want you to get a response. Hopefully, someone else who does have experience will also answer. When I looked up material handler on the US Labor Department website list of jobs, II found no matches. However, there is a listing for materials engineer (which you also have as one of your interest tags). See that link below for more info about this career (or any others you want to look into. It is a helpful resource).

They list the median 2025 wages for a materials engineer as $54.26/hour or $112, 860/ year. In Missouri, specifically, the median annual 2025 income was $98, 860.

Best wishes to you.
