Johnson’s Answer

Hi Adalee, the good news is you can start acting from exactly where you are, and high school is honestly one of the best times to begin. Start with the classes closest to you: take drama or theater at your school if it is offered, and look for an acting or improv class at a local community theater, many of which run teen programs and welcome first-timers. Beyond classes, audition for school plays and community productions, even small parts, because stage time teaches you faster than anything else. Keep building the skills that support acting too: public speaking, reading scripts aloud, and confident presentations (they show up in English, debate, and yes, even math class). Keep your grades steady so college theater or film programs stay open later, and remember most working actors built a second skill alongside acting, so treat school as your foundation, not a distraction from the dream.

Johnson recommends the following next steps:

Join your school's drama program or one community theater teen program this semester and audition for the next production, however small the part.

Monica’s Answer

Hi Adalee,

That’s a great question! I would recommend starting by talking with your school’s guidance counselor to see if you can take a drama or theatre class for a semester. This would be a great opportunity to explore your interest and see if acting is something you’d like to pursue further.

A theatre class can give you hands-on experience in performing, stage production, and learning about the history of Broadway. It’s also a great way to build a foundation in the performing arts and explore the many opportunities available in theatre.

Good luck, and I hope you enjoy exploring your interest in acting!
