What are some ways to teach a student who does not want to learn?
I am studying to be a teacher, but I know in school I was not always willing to learn #education #teaching #teacher

Would be good if you could find out why the student does not want to learn. They may have some very valid reasons or perhaps they simply are not motivated. Some students I have known are satisfied to get by with minimum effort. While we can't force anyone to learn, we can encourage, support and reinforce every small step. Might also be good to look at other positive traits -- are they kind, do they show up for class. If we don't really know their state of mind or issues they are facing, we might need to just appreciate them for the person they are.

ALL students want to and CAN learn. It is important to change your state of mind when faced with a reluctant learner. In this case we must ask ourselves how we are not meeting the needs of the learner. This could be something as simple as the lights in the classroom are too bright, the learner isn't eating a balanced diet, the learner may have an undiagnosed learning or neurological difference, or they are dealing with a difficult home life. You should consider:
-Find out what motivates them.
-Incorporate their personal interests into the lesson to help them stay connected in class
-Are there sensory issues that are not being addressed?
-Does your classroom layout promote learning? Do you have too much stuff on the walls, lights too bright, natural light?
-Meet with parents so you get a more total picture of the learners home life

Hi Cristina,
Some students may not want to learn because the typical education process might seem "boring". Reading bulky textbooks with dry material can seem like a chore. Instead think of fun ways to inspire students. I always enjoyed playing educational games as a child, so maybe think of some hands on activities that can turn into a game. Also, think having some collaborative lessons. Having a mix of individual assignments and group activities can tailor to various personalities and learning styles.
