Hey! That is a great question. Since many people do not get first hand experience experience in engineering fields before they get into college, many people go into engineering not knowing exactly what to expect. This is what happened to me while I was in school getting my engineering degree.
Being an engineer is being fluent in math and relevant science concepts in the area you are interested in. The Bureau of Labor Statistics page says that civil engineering is a growing industry, and they can work in a variety of different positions. Generally, civil engineers typically graduate from college with a civil engineering bachelor of science (BS) degree from an accredited university. That means, that you are going to take lots of math and sciences during your time in college.
Generally, Civil Engineers develop, build, and supervise the building of infrastructure, including roads, buildings, and utility systems. Civil engineers are also commissioned to manage and repair bridges, dams, airports, and other types of structures. This means that some time will often be working on site, while other duties will be performed at a computer, usually running CAD simulations.
Some of the pros include:
Well paid career
Work that directly benefits the community
You can learn how to build houses, rockets, boats, etc
You can work virtually anywhere as a civil engineer
Some of the cons that could be deal breakers:
There is a high curve to learn the specific terms and software that your industry uses
Some projects can have extreme pressures and short deadlines
You also need to know how to manage people, problem solve, and deal with adversity

Great answer, i would also add to the cons that you might be asked to work in remote areas for long periods of time, but also this might mean more money :)
